Objectives

To increase the infrastructural facility and access of essential care to neonates at all levels.

To increase availability of quality neonatal services in PHCs and Hospitals.

To ensure 48 hours stay of delivered mother in the PHC, to take care of the neonate appropriately and also to educate and counsel the mother in child care services.

To make the mother identify the early warning signs and symptoms in the neonate.

To promote exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months and introduce complementary feeding at 6 months of age.

To enhance institutional immunization coverage of children and antenatal women.
Strategies
Establishment of New born care corner in the labour ward of all the PHC and at the District and Sub district hospitals for new born resuscitation and early neonatal care.
Establishment of Special Newborn care unit in the identified CEmONC centers in phased manner.
Establishment of New Born Stabilisation Units in the sub district hospitals and level II MCH centers to decrease the case load at SNCUs.
As a capacity building , training of all Medical officer and Staff nurse of the PHC in the F-IMNCI, and training of Staff nurse posted in the Neonatal intensive care unit for 15 days in the Neonatology unit of tertiary care centres.
Adoption of home based newborn care package of services by training the community (Mother, Self help group) in home based new born care and schedule of visits of all neonates using IMNCI guidelines.
Strengthening of immunization programme to achieve 100% fully immunized status.
Ensuring systematic supply of Vit A and pediatric IFA tablets to strengthen these distribution programmes.
Using BCC strategies effectively to achieve breastfeeding within one hour and to promote exclusive breastfeeding
Facilities
64 Special New Born Care Units have been established in 22 Medical college institutions and 42 secondary care institutions (District and sub district hospitals).
114 New Born Stabilisation Units have been established at sub district hospitals to decrease the case load at the SNCUs.
Nutrition Rehabilitation centre have been established at Dharmapuri Medical College hospital and Perambalur Government Head quarters hospital on pilot basis to treat children with severe acute malnourishment.
29 Neonatal ambulances provided with incubator and paediatric life support measures have been operational for exclusive inter facility transport of new born.
